Haircare on the Go! How to Maintain a Good Routine while Traveling [2023]

Taking care of your hair is essential and as you’ve probably noticed, it can be a long process with several steps! While they are all important, we don’t always have the possibility or the right conditions to go through an entire hair care regime. One such time where we tend to give up on the routine is a vacation!

When you’re travelling, maybe you don’t have time to detangle your hair every single day or to wash, condition and apply a hair mask... we all want to spend our precious, limited vacation time roaming streets, exploring local gastronomy and tanning on the beach! But a good time for you shouldn’t mean a bad time for your hair! As long as you keep to some of these tips, your hair won’t suffer as you travel!

The 80/20 Rule

protective style hair products

While it’s easy to get discouraged by the number of products you usually use; we can sort through them and only bring the essentials! When you travel, there is limited space in your luggage, especially limited space for liquids if you go by plane, and not to mention that you can’t just log around a bunch of suitcases! That seems like a logistical nightmare... So, let’s select the most useful products for a trip! The 80/20 rule states that you take with you only products which cover at least 80% of your hair care needs! Such a product is a hair oil, which is usually in a fairly small bottle too, as an added bonus! Hair oils keep your hair moisturized, tame frizz, they are great as pre-wash and they even protect against UV rays! A good hair oil can go a long way to keep your hair protected and shiny. For example, a small tub of coconut oil will keep your hair soft, moisturized and looking healthy!

Plan Your Hair Time!

The best way to keep yourself on track with your hair care journey is to commit to the time you’re going to dedicate to it. It’s difficult, especially if you’re out and about in a new and interesting environment, but you still have discipline and the ability to set plans and stick to them! Set up a 20-minute hair care routine every 4 days and really commit to it! Write it in your calendar, let your travel companion know, and make sure you’re back at your accommodation in time for the hair care session to begin! It’s only 20 minutes out a day, every 4 days. It’s reasonable and easy to keep to as long as you commit to the plan! And your hair will thank you later!

Choose a Good Hairstyle!

hair growth styles

When you’re on the go, it’s hard to even consider what hairstyle you should go for. Take the bull by the horns, decide on a style that would make your travel days the easiest. We recommend a braided style because it’s great at preventing tangling, it helps keep the hair intact and guarantees that your hair care routine will be easier! We also recommend brushing your hair out and detangling it if you notice any tangles. Add this to your nightly routine and you will save a lot of time and patience!

Beach Care

Going to the beach or swimming in a chlorine-filled swimming pool is a whole lot of fun, but you can definitely see the negative impact on your hair after some fun at the pool. So, if you’re going on a beach vacation, keep in mind that your hair will need even more TLC to survive and thrive. Salt and chlorine are both very effective at drying your hair out, chlorine even changes hair color! It makes blonde hair turn green, for example. So, it’s best to prevent as much damage as you can by applying a good moisturizing conditioner or hair oils to keep as much moisture as you can in your hair. Don’t forget about sun protection either! The combination of salt and sun is sure to make your hair feel dry and brittle, and that leads very quickly to damage, frizz and split ends. Be sure to apply hair oils to your hair, such as avocado, jojoba or coconut oil. These are very helpful against frizzing; they protect your hair from UV rays and the drying effects of salt and chlorine.

Wash Your Hair!

It’s easy to just skip this step, you’re on vacation, why bother, your hair looks fine… But it’s essential to keep that mane clean! As you travel, get through a lot of traffic, planes, trains, maybe some sand from a beach… you can carry that all around with you! Air pollution and dirt do not help your hair at all, it actually damages it, so try to make time for a good, thorough wash. If you notice that your hair is dryer than usual, skip the shampoo and do a co-wash (wash your hair only with conditioner). This way your hair will retain more moisture and get rid of all the dirt and dust particles you want to get rid of!

Haircare requires effort and patience, and if you have a plan that works well, why mess with success? You would hate to start over after a few weeks of travelling and vacationing, once you’ve achieved that hair success, you won’t want to build it up again from the ground up. So, vacation is not an excuse to leave your hair to its own devices. A little effort will take you a long way and you’ll come home from your days off feeling amazing! Don’t forget the 80/20 rule! Select a product that will do the work for you effectively, so you don’t have to carry a suitcase just for your hair products! Keep your hair clean and take the time to look after it on a schedule and it will thank you in the long run! Happy vacation and only good hair days all year!
